What to look out for before doing business online
With a burgeoning demand for e-commerce world over, you will not escape the flurry of activity in this area. In the not-so-distant future, you will notice that people will begin to shop online all the more because it is a better alternative to commuting in the ever maddening traffic to get to your favorite mall only to find that you’d not find place to park your car. On top of that, you will not find a better deal than what you’d find online (The savings come about because of the decrease in the overheads for an e-tailer).

E-commerce is a reality no one can escape. Oh yes, it has its hiccups. But then, most of the very critical discoveries and inventions came with baggage too. When the wheel was first found, rubber wasn’t. Can you imagine a cart with unevenly shaped almost oval wheels? The world did not stop at that, did it? Now that you are convinced that Internet is here to stay and that e-commerce will be the way you are most likely to tread on, it might help to keep a few things in mind when you shop:

1. Victim of Fraud? It’s your fault : Brash as it might sound, please do not go about blaming the entire e-commerce revolution when you suddenly find yourself a victim of Internet Fraud like phishing, Identity theft and the like. You got to take precautions when dealing with online transactions and watch out for your own safety. Surprising thought it might sound, there is far more danger lurking offline than online. It isn’t as dangerous as it may seem, provided you pay heed to some very common check points while shopping online.

2. Don’t shop without the lock on: If you noticed the bottom right corner of your browser, you will find a lock sign. This lock sign or a website address like https://www.examplesite.com are indications (SSL protocols) that the site you are on is a very safe and secure. You are welcome to carry out your transactions on sites like these. You got to tread with care on any shopping site that doesn’t have proper authentication protocols, safety certificates like Verisign, Trust E, Hackersafe and BBB online etc.

3. Don’t respond to spam: Needless to say, please don’t open up spam mails. Most of them are designed to quickly offload a particular spyware, malware, virus or malicious worms in the form of cookies when you open them up. This software resides on your computer and keeps track of all your activities, information, sensitive or critical information.

4. No address, contact info or a person behind the website? Please Exit: Notice the “About Us” page, the ‘Contact Us” page and surf around the site. Do you notice proper contact information with their office addresses, phone numbers and other contact details like names of the business owners, customer service staff? Do they at least respond to the test emails that you would send? If you don’t notice any of that mentioned above, chances are that you are dealing with a phony site designed to milk your last penny out. Beware when dealing with such businesses and it highly recommended that you flee and never visit that site again.

5. Read fine print & Conduct Research: It is boring, yes. But is crucial too. No one loses but you if you don’t read the fine print. Read about the refund policies and avoid grabbing offers that sound too good to be true. Learn about the product/service and the business as much as possible and do some “Due Diligence” like checking out product reviews, chatting on trade directories ( BigOtrade, for instance, has a Trade chat feature that enables you to do just this)
