| Choosing the right vendor |
With the outsourcing boom catching on to the Small and Medium businesses and almost everyone else, we now have a growing army of workers, freelancers and vendors like writers, web designers and a host of other such professionals working from home catering to a wide clientele across the world. The world is now moving from paper-less offices to office-less businesses. But then, how would you ensure that you would choose the right vendors among this ever burgeoning vivid group of talent pool?
Touch Base and Initiate contact: If you narrowed down on a possible remote recruit and think that this person would fit the bill with respect to your requirements, it is very important not to take anything for granted and actually call up, email or touch base with your potential vendors somehow, since you don’t see the person face-to-face more-often-than-not. If you don’t hear from your vendor within a business day, you aren’t talking to the right person.
Ask for sample work before committing: Since there are more run-of-the-mill vendors and very few really committed ones who take their business or profession seriously, it is indeed prudent to ask them to submit a sample article, sample piece of work or something similar before committing so as to make sure of their ability to deliver. It will help you to build trust on your vendors before dumping your advance payments. If your vendors refuse to comply or if they don’t deliver to time, you will have to take that with a pinch of salt.
Maintain A flow of Communication: Do insist in the very beginning that it would be really appreciated if both the parties maintain a constant flow of communication between each other, since there is in-person contact, communication in any form whatsoever since things can easily be misunderstood, taken for granted and if proper communication channels aren’t developed, it could lead to disaster.
Experience vendors are great, but they aren’t the only ones who deliver: Needless to say, it is the experienced vendors who might be the ones you would land up with. But then, they might be expensive, you would have to really check them out because unlike in the real world, you might not get to do a back ground check on them and you are missing out on fairly large pool of talent outside of the realms of experienced vendors who would still do a great job, provided you carry out the due diligence with them.
No portfolio. Not serious: You ought to ask for a portfolio in some form of the other. For most of the types of work that can be rendered in a digital format like works of art, web designs, logo designs, writing of all kinds, it is a must for the vendors of these particular types of work to have a port folio of some sort -- even the inexperienced ones ought to have a made -up portfolio. You can’t just pick and choose anyone at random, especially if that someone does not have a portfolio. It simply indicates that they aren’t serious about what they had set out to do.
